How to get rid of a double chin depends on what is under it. Fat, loose skin, the platysma muscle, a short chin and posture can all produce the same shadow, and each responds to something different. Losing weight helps fat, better posture helps posture, and chin exercises help little. Where those are not enough, medical options are matched to the cause.
Part of Double chin treatment →
A double chin is what you see, not what is producing it. Under the chin there are five separate contributors, and many people have more than one:
That is why lean people can have a double chin, and why some people who lose weight see little change under the chin. The table gives a rough guide to which cause is likely to be the main one.
| Cause | What you tend to notice | A simple check at home |
|---|---|---|
| Fat | Soft fullness that changes with weight | A thick pinch that stays full with the head tilted back |
| Loose skin | Folds or crepiness when looking down | A thin pinch of skin that is slow to spring back |
| Platysma | Vertical cords or a blunt neck line | Bands appear when you grimace or clench |
| Short chin | Fullness even when lean, a weak profile | The fullness eases when you push the jaw forward |
| Posture | Fullness in photographs and on video calls | It disappears when you sit up with the screen at eye level |
The anatomy of each cause is explained on double chin: what is actually under there and in the four causes that look identical.
How to reduce a double chin without treatment comes down to the causes you can influence: fat, posture and, to a degree, skin quality.
If fat leads and you are above your usual weight, losing weight overall helps, because the fat under the chin shrinks with the rest. Fat cannot be lost from one spot alone, so diet and exercise reduce it as part of the whole body, not selectively. If you are already at a healthy weight, further loss changes little under the chin and can hollow the face above it. Large swings in weight also stretch the skin, so a steady approach is kinder to the neck.
A forward head posture and looking down at a phone or laptop fold the soft tissue under the chin, so the area looks fuller than it is. Raising screens towards eye level, sitting back with the head over the shoulders, and holding the phone higher reduce how often the fold forms. In photographs, a camera held slightly above eye level, with the chin brought forward rather than up, changes the shadow a great deal. This is not a cure for fat or loose skin, but it can remove the part of a double chin that is posture.
None of these changes a short chin, a gland or the platysma. Where those lead, home measures will not shift the shadow, and that is not a failure of effort.
“A double chin is a shadow with five possible causes. Diet helps one of them, posture helps another, and the rest need the cause named before anything is done.”

Double chin exercises have little evidence behind them. Chin lifts, neck rolls, tongue presses and jaw exercisers work muscles, and exercising a muscle does not remove the fat lying over it. They do not shorten loose skin either. Some people notice that their posture improves when they practise them, which can soften the part of the shadow that comes from posture.
A few popular methods deserve a plain answer:
If you enjoy them, gentle exercises do no harm. The point is to know what they can and cannot change, so that time and money go to the cause that is actually there. The same honest view of facial exercise applies to the neck lines that often come with a double chin; see neck lift without surgery.
When weight, posture and habits are not enough, a doctor matches the treatment to the cause. Fat-directed treatment does nothing for loose skin or a short chin, and skin tightening does not remove fat, so the cause decides the method. The full comparison is on double chin treatment.

| Cause | Options used here | Options elsewhere | What does not help |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fat under the chin | Onda Pro microwave energy, fat freezing, Time Freeze Laser LCLR® for compact fat, the Reduce aim of the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift | Fat-dissolving injections (deoxycholic acid); liposuction by referral | Skin tightening alone |
| Loose skin | HIFU, Thermage FLX, VF Lift – Vertical Facelift | Neck lift surgery for marked excess, by referral | Fat reduction, which can leave skin looser |
| Short chin | Chin filler to add projection | Chin implant surgery | Fat reduction |
| Platysma bands | Botulinum toxin where appropriate | Surgery for heavy bands with laxity | Heat on the bands |
| Salivary gland | Medical assessment | Specialist review | Any cosmetic fat treatment |
Fat-dissolving injections and liposuction are not performed here; they are described so that you can weigh them. The published evidence for non-surgical fat reduction under the chin covers both cryolipolysis and deoxycholic acid (see the references below), and both act on fat alone. Reducing fat beneath skin that has lost its spring can make the area look looser, which is why skin recoil is checked first.
Most fullness under the chin is fat, skin, muscle or chin shape. Some is not, and those causes need a doctor rather than a cosmetic treatment.
Two other lookalikes are cosmetic but are not a double chin. Jowls sit along the jawline beside the chin rather than under it; see jowls and lower face sagging. A loose, banded neck below the chin is a neck question, with its own options. A double chin treatment applied to either changes the wrong thing.
Dr Sin Yong examines the area himself on Orchard Road. He looks from the front and in profile, at rest and with the head tilted forward and back, because fat, loose skin and a short chin behave differently as the neck moves. A gentle pinch shows how much is fat and how much is skin. Tensing the neck shows the platysma. Pushing the jaw forward shows how much a short chin contributes. Weight history, thyroid or other conditions, medicines and earlier treatment are recorded.
The plan comes in writing: what is producing the fullness, what each option can and cannot do, and the option of no treatment. Some assessments end with advice on posture or weight rather than treatment, and some with a referral for a medical or surgical opinion.
When home measures have done what they can, the treatments, risks and fee factors for each cause are set out on double chin removal Singapore, and the cost factors on double chin treatment cost.

It does not help a double chin caused by a short chin, loose skin, the platysma or a gland, and at a healthy weight further loss changes little under the chin while it can hollow the face. A pinch test shows whether fat is the main cause.
Not in any reliable way. Chin and jaw exercises work muscles, and exercising a muscle does not remove the fat lying over it or shorten loose skin. Neck exercises can even strengthen the platysma, whose pull contributes to banding. Some people find their posture improves when they practise, which can soften the part of the shadow that comes from looking down.
There is no good evidence that mewing, holding the tongue flat against the palate, reduces fat or tightens skin under the chin in adults. Bringing the head back over the shoulders can make the area look less full in the moment, which is a posture effect. If the fullness is fat, loose skin or a short chin, tongue posture does not change it.
Camera angle and posture. A phone held below the face and a head tipped forward fold the soft tissue under the chin, and a wide-angle lens close to the face exaggerates it. Holding the camera at or slightly above eye level and bringing the chin forward rather than up changes the shadow. If the fullness is there with good posture too, fat, skin or chin shape is involved.
There is no quick fix at home: weight loss works gradually and only on fat, and posture changes help the part of the shadow that comes from looking down. Medical treatments also act gradually as the body responds, whether the target is fat, skin or chin projection. The useful first step is finding the cause, so that effort goes to the right thing.
See a doctor promptly if the fullness is new, firm, growing, tender or on one side, or if it comes with fever, difficulty swallowing, a change in voice or unexplained weight loss; these need medical assessment first. For a long-standing, soft fullness that bothers you, an aesthetic assessment separates fat, skin, muscle and chin shape so the right option is chosen.
