What Onda Pro is and how Coolwaves microwave energy works

Onda is a treatment platform made by DEKA, the medical laser manufacturer founded in Florence. It does not use laser light or radiofrequency. It works with microwave energy at 2.45 GHz, delivered through a patented system DEKA calls Coolwaves®. Onda Pro is the current configuration, with a finer Precision-GigaWave handpiece that lets the same technology be used on the face.

The platform carries handpieces that work at different depths: a deeper applicator for subcutaneous fat, a shallower one for cellulite and surface laxity, and the Precision-GigaWave handpiece for finer areas, including the face.

Why the frequency decides where the energy goes

Tissue does not absorb electromagnetic energy uniformly. How readily a tissue takes it up depends on its water and fat content, and on the frequency applied. Radiofrequency, lower down the spectrum, deposits a large share of its energy in the dermis and epidermis, which suits skin tightening. Microwave energy at 2.45 GHz is absorbed preferentially by fat, so proportionally more of it reaches the subcutaneous fat layer rather than being absorbed on the way through.

A contact cooling system holds the skin surface down while this happens, which is what allows the energy to work beneath the skin without an incision or a general anaesthetic. The energy then acts on three structures at once: the membranes of subcutaneous fat cells; the fibrous septa between fat lobules, whose tethering produces the dimpling of cellulite; and dermal collagen, which contracts under heat and remodels gradually as a secondary effect.

Onda Pro suits localised fat, cellulite or mild laxity where examination shows the concern is fat or laxity rather than volume loss, in someone near a stable weight who prefers a non-incisional approach. It is directed at a zone, not at body weight.

The main exclusions follow the 2024 recommendations of an international advisory board of Onda users. Because the session relies on you reporting heat, reduced sensation in the area is a reason not to treat it, and suitability is decided after Dr Sin Yong has taken a medical history and examined the area.

Patients often ask which platform is better. The more useful question is which mechanism suits which presentation, because these devices are not competing versions of the same thing. The table sets Onda Pro beside the other options Dr Sin Yong uses for fat and skin.

Onda lifting on the face

Onda lifting is the term used when the platform is applied to the face. The target becomes dermal collagen rather than a fat compartment, and the energy is delivered at a shallower depth through the smaller handpiece, with tighter control over where it lands. The areas most often approached are the lower face, the jawline and the area under the chin. It introduces nothing into the face and is not a substitute for surgery where the issue is structural descent; whether it suits depends on whether the face shows laxity, volume loss or fat, which is a question for examination rather than for a brochure.

Onda on the body, and cellulite

On the body, microwave energy is directed at localised fat deposits and the tissue around them. Cellulite is worth separating out: the dimpled surface comes from fibrous septa tethering the skin, not from the fat itself, which is why a treatment aimed only at fat rarely changes surface texture. Cellulite is graded first and the plan aims at the component that dominates, as set out on cellulite treatment Singapore. Under the chin, Onda Pro is the fat-directed option where the fullness is fat and the skin is in reasonable condition; the other causes of fullness are on double chin treatment.

What Onda Pro cannot do, and the alternatives

Onda Pro acts on localised fat, the septa behind cellulite and dermal collagen. It does not add volume, reduce fat inside the abdomen or body weight, lift heavy redundant skin, or replace surgery where descent is structural. Part of an honest assessment is saying which of your concerns sits outside that.

Two beliefs come up often in clinic: that Onda Pro is another radiofrequency or laser treatment, when it is microwave energy that tissue absorbs differently; and that treating fat is the same as treating cellulite, when the dimpling comes from fibrous septa.

Is Onda Pro safe? The risks and side effects

Onda Pro is non-invasive but heat-based, and it is not risk-free. The expected effects are warmth, redness, swelling and tenderness in the treated area, sometimes with itching, numbness or a firm feeling under the skin; these settle on their own.

Less common: bruising, more likely in people who bruise easily or take blood-thinning medicines; small nodules that can be felt beneath the skin; blistering or a burn.
Treating many areas in one visit can leave some people tired or feverish afterwards, which is one reason the number of areas per visit is planned at assessment.

The 2024 advisory board linked most adverse effects to how the device is used: too much handpiece pressure, settings too high for the tissue, or treating someone who was not suitable in the first place. Risk is reduced by an examination before treatment, settings chosen for the area and the thickness of the fat layer, contact cooling throughout, and stopping the energy at once if you report excessive heat, while the handpiece stays on the skin to keep cooling it. These steps reduce risk; they do not remove it. Any bruise, nodule or blister that does not settle is reviewed at the clinic.

What to expect: before, on the day and aftercare

Every Onda Pro treatment is assessed and performed by Dr Sin Yong. What changes between people is the area, the handpiece, the settings and the number of zones, none of which is fixed in advance.

Before you book

Declare any pacemaker, implant, metal in the treatment area or heart condition
Declare all medicines, especially blood thinners, and any history of cancer, clotting or diabetes
Tell the clinic if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning pregnancy
Avoid sun exposure and tanning on the area before the visit

On the day

The handpiece is passed over the planned zones with contact cooling at the skin surface; there are no incisions or needles. Most people describe a deep warmth, and many find it tolerable without numbing. Tolerance varies between people and between areas, and comfort is managed during the session; because the treatment relies on you reporting heat, the energy is stopped at once if it feels excessive.

Aftercare and recovery

The sequence below describes phases, not a timetable: how quickly each passes depends on the settings used, the area and the person, and is discussed at consultation.

How Dr Sin Yong approaches Onda Pro

Dr Sin Yong treats Onda Pro as one tool among several rather than a default. He examines the area himself, with a pinch test and a check of skin recoil, to separate fat from loose skin; on the thighs and buttocks he grades cellulite standing, on muscle contraction and with a pinch test, to find the component that dominates. That finding decides whether microwave energy is the right mechanism at all, and which handpiece and zones are used.

He works with Onda Pro as one of four DEKA platforms in his range, alongside the TORO, RedTouch Pro and Tetra Pro CO₂ systems, and his practice is a certified DEKA Centre of Excellence.
