Oligio is a monopolar radiofrequency device made by WONTECH in Korea. Like Thermage, it passes a 6.78 MHz current through the skin to heat the dermis and the fibrous septa beneath it, so collagen contracts and remodels. It is marketed for early skin laxity of the face and body. It is not offered here; Dr Sin Yong prefers the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift and Time Freeze Laser LCLR®.

Short answerOligio is the same class of treatment as Thermage: monopolar radiofrequency at 6.78 MHz, cleared in the United States with Thermage FLX as its predicate. It suits early laxity in skin that still recoils, not fat, lost volume or heavy jowls. Dr Sin Yong does not offer Oligio; he prefers the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift and Time Freeze Laser LCLR®.

What is Oligio, and how does it work?

Oligio is a monopolar radiofrequency generator. A single treatment tip is moved over the skin while a return pad on the body completes the circuit, and an alternating current at 6.78 MHz passes through the full thickness of the skin and the fat beneath it. Tissue resists the current, resistance produces heat, and the heat is made as a volume rather than at a point. Heated collagen in the dermis and in the fibrous septa that run through the fat contracts, and over the following months fibroblasts lay down new collagen. That remodelling is what every monopolar device relies on.

The skin surface has to be protected while the layer beneath it heats. Oligio's US filing describes conductive cooling of the epidermis with a cooling gas and a coupling fluid, with adjustable vibration in the handpiece for comfort, and disposable tips. The treatment is delivered pass by pass, guided by the patient's report of heat.

Oligio was cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration in October 2022 under 510(k) K221989, by comparison with Thermage FLX. That route means the authority accepted that it does the same thing in substantially the same way as its predicate. The cleared wording is for dermatologic procedures requiring electrocoagulation and haemostasis of soft tissue, the same wording as the original Thermage indication; the lifting and tightening language comes from marketing and clinical use. In Singapore, energy devices of this class must be registered with the Health Sciences Authority before supply, and treatment must be done by a registered doctor in licensed premises.

Oligio has clinical use in Korea and in Singapore but little published research under its own name in the indexed medical literature. Most of what is known about how monopolar radiofrequency behaves comes from two decades of studies on Thermage, which shares its frequency and mechanism.

Oligio and Oligio X: what the newer model is

Oligio X is the newer model from the same maker. It was cleared in the United States in February 2024 under 510(k) K240313, and the US device database lists it as a radiofrequency therapy system in the same product class as the original Oligio. In other words, it is a newer generation of the same kind of device, not a different mechanism such as focused ultrasound or microneedling.

Makers update consoles, tips, cooling and comfort features between generations, and clinics often advertise the newer name. For a patient, the useful questions do not change with the model: which tip will be used on which zone, how the energy is set across the face, whether the device is registered with the Health Sciences Authority, who performs the treatment, and what the plan does if the assessment finds the problem is not laxity at all. A newer model does not change who the treatment suits.

“Oligio, Thermage and Volnewmer heat the same layer at the same frequency. The decision is which zone needs heat, how much, and whether heat is the answer at all.”

Dr Sin YongOn choosing a monopolar radiofrequency device

What the Oligio lift can do, and what it cannot

Because Oligio is monopolar radiofrequency, it shares the strengths and limits of that whole category. It acts on the skin envelope and the fibrous network beneath it, and on nothing else. That makes it a tightening treatment for skin that has begun to soften, not a fat treatment, a volume treatment or a substitute for surgery.

ConcernWhat monopolar radiofrequency doesWhat is weighed here
Early laxity of cheeks, jawline or neck in skin that recoilsHeats the dermis and septa so collagen contracts and remodelsThermage FLX or the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift
Crepey eyelid skinA small tip at low energy can treat thin lid skinThermage FLX eye tip, or Volnewmer's smallest tip
Deeper laxity at the SMAS along the jawDoes not place heat at the SMAS the way focused ultrasound doesUltherapy Prime or Ultraformer MPT where tissue depth suits
Fullness from a fat pad or settled fillerDoes not reduce fat; tightening over fullness can look heavierFiller mapped with ultrasound first; Time Freeze Laser LCLR® for compact fat
Hollow temples or a deflated midfaceDoes not add volume; heat in a lean face can hollow it furtherVolume restoration or biostimulation, not heat
Heavy jowls or redundant skinBeyond what any energy device reachesReferral for a surgical opinion

The lean face deserves its own caution. Heat that reaches fat which is not the target can make a slim face look more hollow, and that risk applies to every monopolar and focused-ultrasound device. It is the reason a zone-by-zone plan matters more than the name of the machine.

Oligio, Thermage and Volnewmer side by side

The three monopolar platforms most often asked about in Singapore share a frequency and a mechanism. They differ in surface cooling, the tips supplied and the protocol a doctor runs on them. The full comparison, with a verdict by situation, is on Oligio vs Thermage vs Volnewmer.

Not used at this practice: what is used for laxity instead

Dr Sin Yong does not offer Oligio. Where an examination finds early laxity that suits monopolar radiofrequency, he uses Thermage FLX, which he performs personally with a single-use tip chosen for the face, eyes or body, or Volnewmer, the CLASSYS platform behind his VF Lift – Vertical Facelift. On Volnewmer the face is divided into zones and each is heated along a vertical vector with one of three aims: Lift where skin and septa have loosened, Reduce where there is puffiness from a fat pad or settled filler, and Restore where the cheek has deflated and is stimulated rather than tightened. A slim face is not treated like a full one.

Where laxity sits deeper, at the SMAS along the jawline and under the chin, focused ultrasound on Ultherapy Prime or Ultraformer MPT may suit better. Where the lower face is heavier, compact fat is a question for Time Freeze Laser LCLR®, not for tightening. These are weighed together at one assessment rather than sold as separate menus; the sagging face treatment guide walks through how that decision is made.

Who should not have monopolar radiofrequency, and how laxity is assessed

Some people should not have any monopolar radiofrequency treatment, whatever the brand. Others can, with planning.

At this practice the assessment comes before any device is named. Dr Sin Yong examines the face at rest and in animation, palpates the thickness of skin and fat in each zone, checks recoil, and maps earlier filler with ultrasound where it is suspected. Hyaluronic acid filler that is causing puffiness is dissolved before heat is used. After monopolar radiofrequency, warmth and pinkness that settle are expected, mild swelling is occasional, and a small blister or a tender spot where a pulse stacked is uncommon. Lasting redness, a change in contour or any numbness is reviewed in person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Oligio lift is the name clinics use for treatment with the Oligio device, a Korean monopolar radiofrequency system. A 6.78 MHz current heats the dermis and the fibrous septa beneath it, so collagen contracts and remodels over the following months. It is used for early laxity in skin that still recoils. It does not reduce fat or restore volume, and it is not a surgical lift.

Not the same machine, but the same class. Both are 6.78 MHz monopolar radiofrequency, and Oligio was cleared in the United States with Thermage FLX as its predicate. They differ in surface cooling, tips and the protocol run on them. Thermage has a much longer published record. Oligio is not offered at this practice; for the same aim Dr Sin Yong prefers the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift and Time Freeze Laser LCLR®.

No. For the same aim Dr Sin Yong prefers the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift on Volnewmer, planned zone by zone, and Time Freeze Laser LCLR®. Thermage FLX, which he performs personally, is used where it suits better. Where laxity sits deeper, focused ultrasound may suit better, and where fullness is the concern, a fat treatment is weighed instead. The assessment decides which, if any, is appropriate.

No honest figure applies to everyone. Monopolar radiofrequency works through collagen remodelling, which develops gradually and then fades at a pace set by age, skin quality, weight change and sun exposure. Little published research exists on Oligio under its own name. Whether and when to repeat any radiofrequency treatment is a decision for review, based on how the skin has changed.

Monopolar radiofrequency is not absorbed by melanin the way laser light is, so skin colour is less of a limiting factor than with lasers. The risks are heat-related: blisters, tender spots and, in a lean face, possible hollowing if heat reaches fat that is not the target. Suitability depends on laxity, tissue thickness, implants and medical history, which are assessed in person.
