Brazilian laser hair removal treats the hair of the pubic region, labia and perianal area with a long-pulsed laser so that regrowth is reduced over a staged course. The skin here is usually darker than the rest of the body and the hair is coarse, so wavelength and cooling matter more than anywhere else. Dr Sin Yong agrees the extent beforehand, and every session is doctor-performed with a chaperone offered.

The names are used loosely, so the first thing done at consultation is to agree what will be treated. A bikini line clears hair beyond the edge of ordinary underwear or swimwear: the top of the thighs and the lower abdomen, leaving the pubic region itself alone. An extended bikini takes a little more from the sides and the top. A brazilian treats the pubic region as a whole: the mons pubis, the labia majora, the perineum and the perianal area, either completely or leaving a strip or triangle at the front. A full brazilian, sometimes called a hollywood, leaves nothing.

Each of these is a different amount of skin, in different conditions. The mons and the upper thigh are ordinary body skin, often tanned at the edges. The labia majora and perineum are thinner, more pigmented, and have been shaved or waxed for years in most people who ask. The perianal area is the most pigmented and the most sensitive to heat. Because tone varies within the area, the skin is examined in each part and the settings follow the darkest part being treated, not the lightest. The principles common to every area are on the main laser hair removal page.
Dr Sin Yong draws the agreed boundary with you before the first visit and keeps the same map at each one. Changing the extent later is straightforward; starting with an area that was not discussed is not something that happens here.
This is an intimate area, and the practical arrangements are worth setting out plainly so that nobody is left guessing. Treatment takes place in a private room with the door closed. Disposable underwear or draping is used so that only the part being treated is uncovered, and the drape is moved section by section rather than removed. Protective eyewear is worn throughout, by you and by the doctor.
A chaperone is offered for every intimate treatment and is present whenever you want one; you can also bring someone. Singapore Medical Council guidance treats a chaperone as good practice for intimate examinations, and it is offered here as a matter of routine rather than only on request. The chaperone is a member of the clinic team, and their only role is to be present. You can stop the session at any point, for any reason, and the area is covered while you decide. Nothing is photographed.
Consultations are conducted in English with time for questions, and WhatsApp enquiries are answered in English and Chinese. If anything about the arrangements would make the treatment easier for you, it is simpler to say so at the consultation than on the day.
“In this area the skin is always darker than the chart says. I set the laser for the darkest part I am treating, never for the lightest.”

Genital skin is more pigmented than the skin of the limbs in almost everyone, and the difference is larger in Fitzpatrick III to V, which is most of Singapore. The hair is coarse, dark and dense. Both features concentrate energy: plenty of melanin in the hair, and more melanin than expected in the skin around it. That combination is why wavelength and cooling matter more here than on the arms, and why a protocol copied from the legs is the wrong starting point.
The platform used here carries a long-pulsed 755 nm alexandrite and a 1064 nm Nd:YAG. The 755 nm wavelength is strongly absorbed by melanin, which is effective on hair and unforgiving of pigment in the skin. The 1064 nm wavelength is less readily absorbed by melanin in the upper skin and penetrates deeper, so more of the energy reaches the follicle rather than the surface. Reviews of laser hair removal in darker skin consistently identify the long-pulsed Nd:YAG as the wavelength with the wider safety margin, and in this area the skin is darker than the chart says even on a light-skinned person.
| Part of the area | Typical skin tone relative to the body | Wavelength usually considered | What needs care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bikini line and mons | Same as the body, often tanned at the edges | 755 nm on Fitzpatrick I to III; 1064 nm on IV to VI | A tan line is read as tanned skin and treated as such |
| Labia majora and perineum | One to two shades darker | 1064 nm Nd:YAG in most people; 755 nm only at conservative settings on light skin | Thin skin, years of waxing and shaving; cooling and lower energy |
| Perianal area | Darkest part of the area | 1064 nm Nd:YAG | Most heat-sensitive; treated last, at the most conservative settings |
| Any part, recently waxed or inflamed | Any | Deferred | Inflamed skin absorbs more energy and marks more readily |
Neither wavelength is better in the abstract. The choice is made part by part, and the comparison between these two and the diode lasers used in many salons is on diode vs alexandrite vs Nd:YAG. Post-inflammatory pigment change is the main risk in this area, and the darker the skin the more conservative the settings and the closer the review.
The bikini area is where ingrown hairs and folliculitis are most common, and they are the reason many people ask about laser in the first place. Coarse, curved pubic hair cut by a razor or snapped by wax regrows with a sharp tip that curls back into the skin or tracks sideways under it, producing a tender bump, sometimes a pustule, and in darker skin a brown mark that outlasts the bump itself. Friction from underwear and the warmth and moisture of the area keep the cycle going.
Laser hair reduction helps because fewer, finer regrowing hairs mean fewer sharp tips and less shaving, which is the mechanism rather than any direct effect on an existing bump. Long-pulsed Nd:YAG has been studied specifically for the equivalent problem on the beard in darker skin, pseudofolliculitis barbae, and the same logic applies here. But inflamed skin absorbs more energy and marks more readily, so active bumps, pustules and broken skin are settled before any pulse is delivered. Where bumps persist or look unusual, the cause is examined, since bacterial folliculitis, fungal folliculitis, an infected cyst and some sexually transmitted conditions can all present as bumps in this area and need a different plan.
Treatment runs on the R2 Glow platform, a long-pulsed laser carrying both 755 nm alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG, and every session is performed by Dr Sin Yong after examining the skin of each part on the day. The area is shaved beforehand, not waxed, so that the hair shaft and its pigment stay in the follicle; shaving a day or two ahead is better than on the morning, because freshly shaved skin is often nicked. Any numbing cream is discussed in advance rather than applied without the doctor knowing, because it changes how the skin feels heat.
A brazilian is commonly planned together with the underarms and legs in the same consultation, but each area is set independently. Visits are staged and timed to the hair cycle of this area, settings are adjusted to how the skin responded to the last visit, and the plan is reviewed rather than fixed as a package. What decides the spacing and the length of a course is set out on what decides the number of sessions. Whether the hair here will respond well depends on its colour and thickness and on your skin type, and that is said plainly at consultation.
Afterwards the area feels warm and looks red, with small raised bumps around the follicles, and the labia and perianal skin can feel tender at first. A cool compress helps, and a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser or a soothing gel is enough. For the rest of the day and until the warmth has gone: loose cotton underwear rather than anything tight or synthetic, no hot baths, saunas, swimming or vigorous exercise, and no friction on the area, which includes sexual activity while the skin is still red. Fragranced washes and wipes sting on freshly treated skin and are left until it has fully settled.
In the period that follows, treated hairs push out and shed, which can look like regrowth; it is the hair leaving the follicle. Small crusts sometimes form over the densest hair and come away on their own. Shaving is fine once the skin has settled; waxing and plucking are avoided between visits. A blister, spreading redness, a bump that becomes hot or has a head, or a patch that turns darker or lighter than the surrounding skin is reviewed rather than waited out, and because this is skin that is normally covered, a photograph sent on WhatsApp during clinic hours is often enough to decide whether a visit is needed.
Sun protection matters at the edges of the area, since a tan line between visits shifts the wavelength choice. The general sequence of recovery and scab care is on the laser hair removal aftercare page.

It can be, when the wavelength matches the skin. Genital skin is more pigmented than the limbs in almost everyone, so the 1064 nm Nd:YAG, which is less absorbed by surface melanin, is the usual choice, with 755 nm reserved for conservative settings on lighter skin. Epidermal cooling runs with every pulse, the perianal area is treated at the most conservative settings, and post-inflammatory pigment change is the risk that settings are chosen to avoid.
It helps by reducing the cause. Ingrown hairs come from coarse, curved hair cut by a razor or snapped by wax regrowing with a sharp tip that curls back into the skin. Fewer, finer regrowing hairs mean fewer sharp tips and less shaving. Laser does not treat an existing inflamed bump, which is settled first, and bumps that persist or look unusual are examined, because folliculitis, cysts and some infections look similar.
Yes, if you are comfortable; a tampon or menstrual cup is used and the area is draped as usual. Some people find the skin more sensitive in the days before a period, and it is reasonable to move the visit if that is the case. Pregnancy is different: the area is deferred during pregnancy and while trying to conceive, because hair growth often changes afterwards and treatment in pregnancy has not been studied.
