Laser hair removal for men in Singapore is most often asked about for the beard line and neck, the back, the chest and the shoulders. Male hair there is coarse and dense, so it absorbs a lot of energy, and the wavelength must suit the skin: 755 nm alexandrite on lighter skin, 1064 nm Nd:YAG on darker skin. Dr Sin Yong examines each area and performs every session.

Men most often ask about the beard line, neck, back and chest, and the reason is usually practical. Hair in these areas is coarse and dense, which concentrates energy in the follicle, and shaving can drive ingrown hairs and razor bumps along the beard line and neck. Laser hair reduction is used because fewer, finer regrowing hairs means less shaving, although response varies and inflamed or infected bumps are settled first. Where bumps persist, the cause is examined, since folliculitis and other conditions can look similar. Wavelength and settings follow skin type, as for any other area.
The beard line needs a decision before the first visit, because reducing growth changes how the beard looks, and the aim in a treated area is a reduction in regrowth. The shape of the line is therefore agreed beforehand, and the area to be treated is marked with you. The back and chest are large areas, so treatment is planned zone by zone and reviewed as it goes. Expect warmth, redness and small bumps afterwards, treated hairs that shed gradually and sun protection on exposed skin. Shaving, not waxing, is used between visits so the hair shaft stays in the follicle, and a recent tan or sunburn is a reason to wait.
Laser hair removal works by selective photothermolysis: melanin in the hair shaft absorbs the laser energy, turns it into heat, and that heat reaches the parts of the follicle that produce the hair. Shaving and waxing remove the hair but leave the follicle able to grow another; laser reduces the follicle's capacity to regrow. Regulators describe what lasers achieve as a long-term, stable reduction in regrowth, which is a reduction rather than an absence.

Men usually ask for practical reasons. Coarse beard and neck hair drives razor bumps; back and shoulder hair is hard to reach and quick to return; chest hair is shaved for sport, comfort or appearance. The options for hair removal for men do different things, and two of them are not offered here.
| Option | What it does | Suits | Not for | Page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shaving | Cuts hair at the surface | Any area, any skin; used between laser visits | Reducing regrowth; close shaving drives razor bumps | Beard and razor bumps |
| Waxing or plucking | Pulls hair out below the surface | Occasional use outside a laser course | A laser course, because it removes the hair the laser needs | Laser hair removal |
| IPL or SHR | Broadband light, or low-fluence repeated passes on some devices, sold under similar names | Not offered at this practice | Telling you the wavelength or fluence; the acronym alone says little about the device | Devices compared |
| Long-pulsed laser, 755 nm or 1064 nm | Heats pigmented follicles; wavelength matched to skin type | Dark hair on skin that is not freshly tanned | White, grey or very fine hair | Laser for darker skin |
| Electrolysis | A fine probe treats each follicle individually | Grey or white hairs that laser cannot find; not offered here | Large areas such as the back | Hair removal guides |
A 2013 review of the literature in Dermatologic Surgery supported long-pulsed alexandrite, diode and Nd:YAG lasers for long-term hair reduction and found the Nd:YAG, with its longer wavelength, suited to pigmented skin. That is the reason the platform here carries both wavelengths.
The beard line needs a decision before the first visit, because a reduced beard does not grow back the way it was. Most men want shaping: the neck below the jaw cleared, the cheek line tidied and stray hairs thinned, with the beard itself left alone. Full removal treats the whole area so that regrowth is reduced throughout, and it is a decision to live with. Either way, the line is drawn on the face, agreed with you and recorded on a diagram before any pulse.
Razor bumps, pseudofolliculitis barbae, are the commonest reason a man books. Curved beard hair cut below the surface re-enters the skin as it regrows, and the skin reacts to it as a foreign body. Fewer, finer regrowing hairs mean less shaving and less re-entry. A 2002 study of 37 patients with skin types IV to VI and razor bumps that had not settled with conservative care found fewer papules in the area treated with a long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser than in an untreated control area. Inflamed or infected bumps are settled before treatment, and bumps that persist after the hair has thinned are examined rather than lasered again, since folliculitis, fungal folliculitis and acne can look similar.
The shaping choices, the regrowth patterns to expect and the wavelength table for the beard are on beard laser hair removal.
“A reduced beard does not grow back the way it was, so the line is agreed before the first pulse. A back is a different decision: there, the question is the skin underneath, not the shape.”

The back, chest and shoulders are large areas of dense terminal hair, so they are planned zone by zone and reviewed as treatment goes on rather than fixed as one block. Each zone is examined on the day, because hair density and skin tone vary across the trunk, and a tan from outdoor sport often sits on the shoulders and upper back without being noticed.
Paradoxical hypertrichosis is an uncommon effect in which fine hair near a treated area becomes coarser. A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis of 9,733 patients put its pooled prevalence at about 3%, and found it was associated with the face and neck, occurring in under 0.1% of treatments elsewhere on the body. On the back and chest it is therefore rare, while along the beard edge it is something Dr Sin Yong watches for at review and discusses beforehand. Men asking about the equivalent of a brazilian, sometimes called a boyzilian, are assessed on the same principles, with the same privacy arrangements as on the brazilian page.
For men with Fitzpatrick IV to VI skin, the 1064 nm Nd:YAG is the wavelength used, because it is absorbed less by melanin in the upper skin and so more of the energy reaches the follicle rather than the surface. The 755 nm alexandrite is strongly absorbed by melanin; that makes it well matched to dark hair on lighter skin, Fitzpatrick I to III, and unforgiving of pigment in darker skin.
Male hair raises the stakes on both sides. Beard, chest and back hair is coarse, dense and dark, so it absorbs a great deal of energy and conducts heat into the skin around it, and the men most troubled by razor bumps tend to have darker skin that marks easily. Having both wavelengths on one platform means the setting is matched to the man rather than one compromise applied to everyone. Epidermal cooling runs with every pulse, and a test patch is routine on Fitzpatrick IV and above and on any tanned area.
Wavelength choice is set out in full on laser hair removal for darker skin and in the Nd:YAG laser glossary entry.
Laser hair removal is deferred in several situations, most of them temporary, and the first visit exists to find them. A recent tan, sunburn or self-tan is the commonest, because the extra pigment in the skin absorbs energy meant for the follicle. Active infection, inflamed folliculitis, a cold sore near the beard, eczema or broken skin in the area is treated first.
Beard and body hair are hormone-driven throughout adult life, so follicles go on responding to androgens after a course, and occasional maintenance is discussed honestly rather than ruled out. Suitability for each area is set out on am I suitable for laser hair removal.
Every session is performed by Dr Sin Yong at the clinic on Orchard Road, Singapore, after he has examined the skin and hair on the day. The area is shaved a day or two beforehand, not waxed or plucked, so that the hair shaft and its pigment stay in the follicle. Protective eyewear is worn throughout, the agreed beard line is marked on the face, large areas are planned zone by zone, and cooling runs with each pulse.
Afterwards, warmth, redness and small raised bumps around the follicles are expected and settle on their own, and treated hairs shed gradually. Exposed areas need sun protection, and hot showers, saunas and strenuous exercise are avoided while the skin settles. A 2023 review of 104 publications on adverse events of light-assisted hair removal found most complications were linked to skin type, body area and device settings, and that the Nd:YAG had the highest pain scores of the devices compared. That is why the settings, cooling and pace are adjusted to each area. Blistering, crusting, spreading redness or new dark or light patches are reasons to contact the clinic.
No number of visits is quoted in advance, because it depends on the hair cycle in each area, hair density and colour, skin type and hormones; what decides it is on how many laser hair removal sessions. The fee follows the areas, the hair density and the wavelength used, and is quoted in writing after assessment, as on how fees are quoted. Aftercare in full is on laser hair removal aftercare.

WhatsApp Dr Sin Yong →or use the enquiry formThe physics is the same, but laser hair removal for men usually involves coarser, denser hair over larger areas such as the back, chest and shoulders, and the beard needs a decision about shape before the first visit. Razor bumps along the neck are a common reason to start. Wavelength still follows skin type, and Dr Sin Yong plans each area separately.
The options for hair removal for men are shaving, waxing or plucking, light-based devices such as IPL, long-pulsed laser and electrolysis. Shaving and waxing remove hair without reducing regrowth. Laser reduces the follicle's capacity to regrow pigmented hair, with the wavelength matched to skin type. IPL and electrolysis are not offered at this practice; electrolysis is the remaining option for grey or white hairs.
Yes. The back, chest and shoulders are among the areas assessed for men, and the hair there is often coarse and dense. Because these are large areas, laser hair removal is planned zone by zone and reviewed as it goes. Active acne or folliculitis is treated first, moles in the field are checked, and a recent tan from outdoor sport means waiting.
Laser hair removal can help razor bumps, pseudofolliculitis barbae, because fewer and finer regrowing hairs mean less shaving and fewer hairs re-entering the skin. The long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd:YAG has been studied for razor bumps in darker skin. Inflamed or infected bumps are settled first, and bumps that persist after the hair thins are examined, since other conditions can look similar.
It is uncommon. Paradoxical hypertrichosis, where fine hair near a treated area becomes coarser, has a pooled prevalence of about 3% in a large meta-analysis, and was associated mainly with the face and neck rather than the back or chest. Along the beard edge and neck, Dr Sin Yong reviews the margins and settings if new coarse hair appears outside the treated zone.
No number of laser hair removal sessions is quoted in advance. Only follicles in the active growth phase respond at any one visit, and the share varies by area, so the beard, back and chest behave differently. Hair density, colour, skin type and androgen levels also change the course. Each next visit is planned from how the area has responded.
Laser hair removal is usually felt as a brief, sharp heat with each pulse, most noticeable where hair is dense, such as the beard, neck and chest. Cooling runs with every pulse, and the pace and settings are adjusted to the area and to you. The 1064 nm wavelength used for darker skin tends to be felt more, which is discussed before the first visit.
Singapore's rules restrict fee advertising, so no figure is given here. The fee for laser hair removal for men depends on the areas treated, the density and thickness of the hair, the wavelength and consumables, the number of zones, and whether areas are combined. Dr Sin Yong gives a written quote after examining the skin and hair in each area.
