A significant portion of the lecture was devoted to the 1550nm Erbium Glass Laser component of the Secret Duo — and specifically the evidence base for its use beyond conventional skin resurfacing. Dr Sin Yong presented peer-reviewed data across two distinct indications that are less commonly discussed but clinically well-supported:
Melasma — Histological studies demonstrate that 4 sessions of fractional erbium glass laser, spaced 2 weeks apart, produce a significant reduction in melanocytes both pre- and post-treatment in Skin Types 3 and 4 patients. Dr Sin Yong walked through the histological evidence and how this underpins his approach to using the Secret Duo’s laser component in melasma management, where conventional ablative resurfacing would be contraindicated in darker skin types.
Androgenetic Alopecia — Published research demonstrates that the 1550nm erbium glass fractional laser, applied to the scalp at 12 sessions spaced 2 weeks apart, produces significant increases in hair count and shaft diameter, mediated through upregulation of IGF-1 and Wnt/β-Catenin signalling pathways — the same molecular mechanisms that govern hair follicle activation and anagen phase promotion.
