“Laser lipo” is used for two very different things. One is micro laser liposuction: a surgical procedure in which a thin laser fibre is placed under the skin through small incisions. The other is surface laser treatment, where energy is applied through the skin with nothing inserted. They differ in what they reach, how much they remove, and how they are regulated.

Micro laser liposuction
In laser-assisted liposuction, a thin fibre is passed under the skin through small incisions, usually after tumescent anaesthetic. The laser heats fat and the fibrous tissue under the skin. The loosened fat is then suctioned out with fine cannulas. Because fat is physically removed, the change in volume is larger and comes sooner than with any surface treatment.
The heat under the skin is thought to help the skin contract over the smaller volume. In a randomised, blinded split-abdomen study, the laser-treated side showed more skin shrinkage at one and three months and more tightening at three months than standard liposuction. A meta-analysis comparing liposuction techniques found complications across all of them, with no technique free of risk.
Laser-assisted liposuction is still liposuction. In Singapore, the MOH liposuction framework sets who may perform it and where, and includes a cooling-off period before surgery.
Surface laser treatment
Time Freeze Laser LCLR® is applied from the surface. It combines lipo-remodelling of superficial fat with collagen tightening, so it is used where a smaller excess and loosening skin sit together: a heavy lower face, an overfilled fat graft, or the area above a waistband. Change is gradual over sessions and there is no incision.
Surface treatment does not remove fat in volume. For a large, deep pocket, liposuction remains the more direct option, and surface treatment may then be used afterwards for the skin.
