Liposuction is the most searched body procedure in Singapore, and one of the most tightly regulated. It removes fat through a cannula; it does not remove skin, and it does not tighten it. This guide sets out what the Ministry of Health rules mean for you, what recovery looks like, what decides the cost, and what can be done if the skin stays loose once it has all settled.

Short answerIn Singapore, liposuction may only be performed by doctors accredited under the Ministry of Health’s liposuction framework, in a hospital or an approved Ambulatory Surgical Centre, with a seven-day cooling-off period. Removal of more than one litre of fat, general anaesthesia or deep sedation, a BMI above 28, or a repeat procedure over the same region must be done as an inpatient. Liposuction removes fat but cannot make skin retract, so laxity afterwards is assessed and treated separately.

The rules: who may perform liposuction, and where

Singapore regulates liposuction by procedure. Doctors who perform it must be accredited by the Accreditation Committee on Liposuction, and it may only be done in a hospital or in a clinic approved as an Ambulatory Surgical Centre that also holds a separate approval for liposuction. A seven-day cooling-off period applies before the procedure.

Some cases must be done as an inpatient in hospital: removal of more than one litre of supernatant fat in a session, general anaesthesia or deep sedation, a BMI above 28, or a repeat removal or injection of fat over the same region. The rules do not set a separate category for small areas, so chin, face and arm liposuction, and microliposuction, fall under the same framework.

Vaser, laser-assisted and conventional liposuction

The names describe how the fat is loosened before it is suctioned: ultrasound-assisted (often called Vaser), laser-assisted, power-assisted, radiofrequency-assisted or conventional suction. All are invasive and all fall under the same rules. A systematic review of isolated aesthetic liposuction found that complication rates differed by technique, with skin irregularities reported in between 0.12% and 3.36% of cases.

What recovery looks like

Swelling, bruising, numbness and firmness are expected, and the tissue continues to settle over several months. Compression garments and follow-up are set by your surgeon. Some unevenness in the first weeks reflects swelling rather than the final contour, which is why laxity and contour are judged once recovery has settled.

A growing fluid swelling, increasing pain, redness or warmth, fever, or skin that darkens or breaks down are not part of normal recovery and should be seen by your surgeon promptly.

What decides the cost of liposuction in Singapore

The cost depends on the number and size of areas, the technique, the setting (hospital or approved surgical centre), anaesthesia, whether an inpatient stay is required, and the surgeon’s fees. If fat transfer is being added, that is a separate procedure. It is worth asking what follow-up and any revision would involve before comparing quotes.

If the skin stays loose afterwards

Liposuction takes the fat out; the skin over it has to retract on its own. With age, thinner skin, previous weight loss or pregnancy, or a large volume removed, it may not fit the new contour. Dr Sin Yong separates laxity from residual fat, uneven contour and dents, then treats laxity without further surgery with VF Lift – Vertical Figure Lift and Time Freeze Laser LCLR®, using the 4K Body Lift for thicker residual pockets. Marked skin excess is referred to a plastic surgeon. See loose skin after liposuction.

When a non-surgical route may suit instead

For a compact fat pocket under reasonable skin, or for skin laxity with a thin fat layer, energy-based body contouring may suit better than surgery. It is gradual and does not remove fat in volume the way liposuction does. An assessment that separates fat, skin and muscle usually shows which route fits.

“Liposuction takes the fat out. Whether the skin follows is a separate question, and it deserves its own answer.”
