Skin retraction:
what the term means

Skin retraction is the skin’s ability to shrink back over a smaller volume, such as after liposuction or weight loss. It depends on the skin’s elastic recoil, which falls with age and sun damage and is reduced by stretch marks, previous weight loss and pregnancy.

Key facts
Why it matters
Liposuction removes fat; the skin has to retract on its own
Reduced by
Age, sun damage, stretch marks, weight loss, pregnancy, large volumes
When judged
After recovery has settled, usually several months
If inadequate
Energy-based tightening; surgery for marked excess

After liposuction

Where the skin does not retract enough, the area looks loose, crepey or folded. That is laxity, and it is treated separately from fat. See loose skin after liposuction.

Supporting retraction

For mild to moderate laxity, Dr Sin Yong uses VF Lift – Vertical Figure Lift on the body and Time Freeze Laser LCLR® where a thin fat layer remains.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It removes fat; retraction afterwards depends on the skin.

Mild to moderate laxity can be tightened with energy-based treatments; marked excess skin needs surgery.
