After radiofrequency microneedling, expect redness like a sunburn for a day or two, possibly with a faint grid of tiny marks, mild swelling and dryness. Keep the skin clean and moisturised, avoid make-up for about a day and actives for several days, protect from sun strictly, and let any fine flaking come away on its own. Many people look presentable within a few days.

What should you do and avoid after RF microneedling, phase by phase?

This table sets RF microneedling aftercare out by phase rather than by date: straight after treatment while the microchannels are closing, the early phase of dryness and flaking, and the settling phase while the skin responds to the heat placed in the dermis. Each row lists what is expected, what to do, what to avoid and the signs that should be checked rather than waited out.

Day by day

Days one and two: redness, warmth and mild swelling, sometimes with tiny pinpoint marks in a grid. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and apply the moisturiser you were given. Avoid make-up for about a day, and avoid sweating heavily.

Days three to five: the skin may feel tight and dry, with fine flaking. Do not scrub or pick. Keep moisturising. Day five onward: retinoids and exfoliating acids can usually restart once the skin is comfortable, often at five to seven days.

Sun and pigment

Any heat-based treatment can trigger post-inflammatory darkening, particularly in medium and darker skin tones, including many Asian skin types. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, reapplied when outdoors, and a hat in strong sun lower that risk. Treatments in a series are spaced weeks apart for the same reason.

How to care for your skin after RF microneedling

Aftercare following RF microneedling is simple, and following it closely matters more than any product you add. Expect redness and fine pinpoint marks at first; how long these take to settle depends on the depth and energy used and on your skin.

Keep the skin clean with a gentle cleanser and a plain moisturiser, and avoid scrubs, retinoids and exfoliating acids until you are told to restart them. Do not pick at any small scabs. Sun protection is essential, particularly for Fitzpatrick III to V skin, where unprotected sun exposure during healing raises the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation. Make-up, swimming, saunas and intense exercise should wait until the treated skin has settled, and specific timings are given to you on the day.

If redness worsens rather than eases, or the skin becomes increasingly painful, swollen or weepy, get in touch rather than waiting for the review. Remodelling continues quietly under the surface, so progress is judged at review, not in the mirror the following morning.

The sequence below describes phases, not a timetable; how quickly each passes depends on the settings used, the area and the person.

  1. Immediately afterRedness, warmth and fine pinpoint marks across the treated zones; the skin can feel tight, like a sunburn.
  2. The first eveningOnly bland cleanser and moisturiser; no actives, no make-up over open channels, and no picking at any pinpoint scabs.
  3. The following daysRedness fades and pinpoint marks flake away; strict sun protection matters most in Fitzpatrick III to V skin to avoid pigment change.
  4. As the skin settlesEarly tightness reflects the healing response, not the result; scars, pores and laxity remodel gradually at different rates.
  5. Follow-upWorsening redness, pain, swelling or weeping skin is seen promptly; otherwise the plan is reviewed against how the skin has responded.

When to send a message

Redness that is spreading rather than fading, crusting, pustules, or increasing pain after day two are not expected and should be checked.

Questions after treatment come back through WhatsApp at +65 8023 7170 during clinic hours (Monday to Friday 10am to 8pm, Saturday 11am to 3pm, Singapore time). Anything that is getting worse rather than better, a blister or open area, or fever needs to be seen the same day, wherever you are.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Pinpoint marks in a grid, with redness, warmth and mild swelling, are expected where the needles entered, and the skin may then feel tight and dry with fine flaking. Do not scrub or pick, and keep moisturising with the product you were given. Redness that spreads rather than fades, crusting, pustules or increasing pain are not expected and should be checked.
Gentle activity is fine, but heavy sweating is avoided until the needle channels have closed, because sweat and heat can irritate fresh skin and prolong redness, and gym surfaces carry bacteria. Cleanse gently afterwards and keep towels and pillowcases clean. If exercise is followed by spreading redness, pustules or rising pain, send a message rather than waiting for the review.

Usually one to three days.

Usually after about 24 hours, once the tiny channels have closed.

Usually after about five to seven days, once the skin is comfortable.

About two to four days is usually planned.
