VF Lift vs HIFU compares two different energies. The VF Lift – Vertical Facelift is Dr Sin Yong's protocol on Volnewmer monopolar radiofrequency, which heats the dermis and the layer beneath it as a volume. HIFU focuses ultrasound to small points at set depths, down to the SMAS. How much fat a face has to spare usually decides which one leads.

Short answerThe VF Lift – Vertical Facelift is monopolar radiofrequency on Volnewmer: it heats a volume of dermis and the fibrous layer beneath, zone by zone, with Lift, Sculpt and Restore modes, and uses no focused ultrasound. HIFU converges ultrasound to points at set depths, including the SMAS at 4.5 mm, and can reduce fat where it is delivered. Dr Sin Yong plans the VF Lift for lean faces and keeps HIFU for structural descent in a face with normal fullness.

VF Lift vs HIFU: what each energy does

VF Lift vs HIFU is a comparison of two physics, not two brands of the same thing. They heat tissue in different shapes and at different depths, which is why they suit different faces.

The VF Lift – Vertical Facelift runs on the CLASSYS Volnewmer, a 6.78 MHz monopolar radiofrequency platform with continuous water cooling. Current passes through the tissue and heats the dermis and the fibrous septa beneath it as a volume, rather than at points. Dr Sin Yong plans it zone by zone along vertical vectors, in three modes: Lift for loose tissue, Sculpt for areas that pouch, and Restore for hollow areas. It uses no focused ultrasound. Volnewmer works at the same frequency as Thermage FLX; in a randomised split-face trial in 22 Asian women, water-cooled and cryogen-cooled monopolar radiofrequency gave comparable lifting, volume and wrinkle results, with less procedural pain on the water-cooled system (Roh 2025).

HIFU, high-intensity focused ultrasound, converges sound waves so that a small point beneath the skin heats while the surface is spared. Here it is delivered on the Ultraformer MPT, with 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.5 mm cartridges chosen from palpation, or on Ultherapy Prime, which images the tissue before each line. At 4.5 mm the points sit in the SMAS, the layer a surgical facelift tightens; at 3.0 and 1.5 mm they sit in the dermis. Its tightening effect on facial and neck skin has been measured in a rater-blinded study (Alam 2010).

“Lean face, I do not plan HIFU. Normal fullness with a loose jawline, HIFU has a place. The face decides, not the machine.”

Dr Sin YongOn choosing between radiofrequency and focused ultrasound

Why the amount of facial fat decides between them

Focused ultrasound reduces subcutaneous fat where it is delivered. That effect is used on purpose under the chin. In a lean face, the same effect reads as hollowing, and loss of fat is a recognised side effect of focused ultrasound. For that reason Dr Sin Yong does not plan HIFU or Ultherapy for lean or already hollow faces.

For those faces he uses the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift. It lifts loose tissue in the Lift mode, and in the Restore mode it is used to stimulate the face's own fat to regenerate in hollow areas: the temples, the forehead, under the eyes, the lateral cheeks and the prejowl sulcus. Any change builds gradually and varies between people and with age. A very thin face is still treated with restraint, because any heating treatment over thin tissue needs care.

Where HIFU fits well is structural descent in a face with normal fullness: a softening jawline, laxity under the chin, a loosening neck, with enough tissue above the bone for the 4.5 mm cartridge. Where the face is puffy or heavy, neither is the first choice; the Sculpting mode of Time Freeze Laser LCLR® is planned for sagged fat and settled product. The short version Dr Sin Yong uses: lean face, VF Lift; puffy face, Time Freeze; normal fullness with deeper descent, HIFU has a place. Why HIFU can thin a face is explained in does HIFU melt face fat.

What the VF Lift and HIFU cannot do

Each energy has limits, and they are different limits.

The VF Lift – Vertical Facelift cannot

HIFU cannot

Neither can

Both commonly leave redness, warmth and tenderness that settle. Less often, radiofrequency can cause a blister or a slight dent over thin tissue, and HIFU can irritate a nerve branch along the jaw. These risks are stated at the consultation, not after it.

When both are used, and in which order

Some faces have changed in two layers: a SMAS that has loosened along the jaw and skin that has lost firmness across the cheek. Then both energies may be planned, because each acts on a layer the other does not. The dominant finding decides which goes first, and the second is timed at review once the first response has been read, not stacked on the same day. Many faces need one energy only. The sequencing is set out in detail on HIFU with VF Lift – Vertical Facelift, and the general mechanism comparison in HIFU vs radiofrequency.

How Dr Sin Yong chooses at assessment

The choice is made on the face, not the device list. Dr Sin Yong examines the face at rest and in animation, and with the tissue lifted gently by a fingertip to see whether descent or excess is driving the shape. He palpates skin and fat thickness zone by zone, using ultrasound where earlier filler is involved or the fat layer looks thinner than expected.

He asks about any previous HIFU, Ultherapy or radiofrequency, with the device and date. A face that looks hollower after focused ultrasound elsewhere is assessed in person; where the hollowing is established, the VF Lift is the approach he reaches for. The plan is written down: which energy, which zones, what will not be done, and the option of no treatment. Fees are not published; how fees are quoted explains the written quote. If you are weighing lifting against adding volume, see face lifting without fillers.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The VF Lift – Vertical Facelift runs on Volnewmer monopolar radiofrequency, which heats the dermis and the fibrous layer beneath it as a volume. HIFU uses focused ultrasound to heat small points at set depths, down to the SMAS. The VF Lift uses no focused ultrasound at all. They are different energies acting on different layers, and they suit different faces.

It depends on what the jowl is made of and how much fat the face has. A jowl from lax tissue in a lean face is planned with the VF Lift. Deeper descent along the jaw in a face with normal fullness can suit HIFU. A jowl that is mostly a fat pad points to the Sculpting mode of Time Freeze Laser LCLR®. Some jowls need two of these.

It can in the wrong face. Focused ultrasound reduces subcutaneous fat where it is delivered, which is useful under the chin but reads as hollowing in a lean face. That is why tissue thickness is palpated zone by zone, the deepest cartridge is kept to areas with enough depth above bone, and lean faces are planned with the VF Lift instead.

Usually, yes. Bring the device name, the zones treated and the date. The face is examined for how it has responded and for any swelling, tenderness or hollowing, and the VF Lift is timed to settled tissue rather than booked by the calendar. Where hollowing followed the HIFU, the Restore mode may be part of the plan.

No duration can be promised for either. How long any change lasts depends on the degree of laxity, your tissue, the zones treated, ageing, sun exposure and weight change. Both work through a collagen response that develops gradually. Whether and when to repeat is decided at review, according to how your face has responded, not to a fixed schedule.

Not as the usual plan. Adding a second heating treatment before the first response has been read adds heat to tissue that is still responding and makes any problem harder to trace. When both are indicated, the dominant finding decides which goes first, and the second is timed at review. Many faces need one energy only.
