For the whole face rather than the jaw alone, see VF Lift vs thread lift.

For how the chin, masseter and jawline are read together, see V shape face Singapore.

Where the concern is fullness under the chin rather than the jawline, see double chin removal Singapore.

For patients who prefer no threads, RVR ProLift is Dr Sin Yong's threadless alternative, placing biodegradable product along vertical vectors.

If one side of the jaw sits lower, read about facial asymmetry.

Threads do not project the chin point; for that, see chin enhancement Singapore.

Jawline threads are absorbable barbed threads placed under the skin of the lower face so that a jowl which has slid below the jaw line is carried back toward an anchor in front of the ear. They answer jowl descent in skin that still has recoil, not skin excess, heavy fat or a jaw that lacks bony support. Whether threads suit your jawline is decided at consultation.

Key facts
What it moves
The lower cheek fat pad that has slid over the mandibular ligament to form a jowl, carried back along a planned vector
Plane
Subcutaneous fat, below the skin and above the SMAS; the SMAS itself is not repositioned
Not a thread question
Established skin excess, a heavy mobile jowl, a full under-chin fat pad, or a jaw edge that is soft because bone support is lacking
Alternatives
Filler or a biostimulator where structure is missing; VF Lift – Vertical Facelift where laxity and pinchable jowl fat lead; referral for a heavy jowl
Risks specific to the jaw
Dimpling, a palpable thread under thin skin, asymmetry, and the facial nerve branch that runs near the jaw edge
Availability
Confirmed at consultation; a plan is written only after Dr Sin Yong has examined the jawline seated and in movement

Lifting without adding volume. For a thread lift, Dr Sin Yong's first choices are his own protocols, the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift (monopolar radiofrequency on Volnewmer) and Time Freeze Laser LCLR® (dual-wavelength laser). Both work on your own tissue. Nothing is injected, so there is no filler to overfill, migrate or form lumps. Which one suits you, if either, is decided at assessment.

What are jawline threads, and what do they actually move?

A jowl is not new tissue. It is the lower cheek fat compartment that has slid downward and folded over the mandibular ligament, the fixed point along the jaw that stops it travelling further. As the retaining ligaments attenuate, the skin thins and the layer beneath loosens, the fat pad moves past the line of the jaw and the clean edge that used to run from chin to ear is interrupted by a soft bulge. The jowls and lower face sagging page sets out that anatomy in detail.

Jawline threads work on that movement mechanically. Each thread is made of an absorbable polymer, usually PDO (polydioxanone) or PCL (polycaprolactone), and carries small barbs or cones along its length. It is introduced through a small entry point near its anchor, laid in the subcutaneous fat along a line that crosses the jowl, and then drawn toward the anchor so that the barbs engage the tissue and the fat pad moves with them. The anchor sits in firmer tissue in front of the ear, where the skin is tethered more closely to the structures beneath and can hold the pull. The thread end is trimmed beneath the skin.

As the polymer is absorbed, PDO earliest and PCL more slowly, the mechanical hold tapers while a track of collagen laid down along its path remains. A thread does not heat tissue, add volume or remove skin, and facial ageing continues regardless of what is placed. That is why threads are chosen for some jawlines and not for others.

The Bliss Lift page describes Dr Sin Yong's thread lift protocol, in which the jowl and lower face is one of the zones addressed, with the vectors mapped and the threads placed by Dr Sin Yong himself. This page looks at the jawline specifically: what the request usually means, how threads compare with the other tools used at the jaw, and who is directed elsewhere.

Jowl repositioning vs jawline definition: are they the same request?

People ask for a sharper jawline for different reasons, and the reason decides the tool. Three presentations come up most often.

A jowl that has slid

The jaw edge is still there, but a soft pad of tissue hangs over it toward the chin, and a shallow hollow forms in front of it beside the chin. Lifting the cheek gently with a fingertip toward the ear makes the line reappear. This is descent, and it is the presentation threads were designed for: a mobile fat pad, a firm bony margin and skin with enough recoil to follow the tissue back.

A jaw that lacks structure

The jaw edge is soft because the bone underneath is small, short or has resorbed with age, or because the chin sits back. Lifting the cheek does not produce a crisp line, because there is no edge for the tissue to sit on. Moving tissue toward the ear here simply flattens the lower face. Structure is added, not repositioned: the jawline filler guide explains how firm filler or a biostimulator placed near the bone at the angle, body and chin does that.

A lower face that is full or wide

The line is blurred by fat under the chin, by a large masseter muscle at the angle, or by skin that has loosened across the whole lower face and neck. None of these is a thread question. Under-chin fat is assessed on the double chin page, a wide angle from muscle bulk on the square jaw page, and established skin laxity through the energy-based and surgical routes described below.

Many faces show more than one of these at once, and then the thread is one part of a plan rather than the plan.

“A thread can carry a jowl back to the jaw. It cannot carry skin that has nowhere left to go, and it cannot build a jaw edge that was never there.”

Dr Sin YongOn choosing jawline threads

Jawline threads vs jawline filler vs VF Lift – Vertical Facelift: which suits which jawline?

Three non-surgical approaches are commonly considered at the jaw. Each acts on a different layer by a different mechanism, which is why the comparison is made by cause rather than by preference.

The three are often staged together. A jowl that has slid in front of a short jaw may need structure at the chin and angle first, so that the repositioned tissue has an edge to sit on. A jowl that has slid in skin that has also started to loosen may be threaded and then treated with radiofrequency, so that the envelope is conditioned as well as the fat pad moved. Focused ultrasound is another option for laxity at the SMAS layer that threads do not reach, and the HIFU for jowls page explains where it fits. What is combined, and in which order, is decided at consultation rather than added on the day.

Who suits jawline threads, and who is directed elsewhere?

Jawline threads tend to suit a face in which the jowl is a mobile pad that has moved, the jaw edge beneath it is firm, the skin still has elasticity on a pinch-and-recoil test, and there is no large volume deficit pulling the lower face inward. The deciding factor is tissue rather than age, and an acceptance that a thread repositions tissue rather than tightening skin.

They suit less well, or not at all, in these situations:

Active skin infection along the planned vectors, a bleeding tendency, keloid scarring, pregnancy and previous non-absorbable implants or long-lasting fillers in the same plane are discussed individually and may mean waiting or choosing a different route. The jowl fat vs sagging page explains the pinch test that separates a fat pad from loose skin, which is often the first question.

How is a jawline thread plan assessed, and what decides it?

The jawline is examined seated and in movement, not lying flat, because descended tissue settles differently under gravity. Dr Sin Yong looks at the jaw in profile and three-quarter view, at rest and while you speak, pinches the jowl to separate fat from skin, lifts the cheek gently along the direction the tissue came from to see whether the line returns, and checks skin thickness over the jaw edge.

If threads are appropriate, the plan is drawn on the seated face: the anchor point, the direction of each vector, the number of threads and the material for each. That map is the plan. Several factors shape it:

The number of threads is only known once the vectors are drawn, which is why the fee is set out at that point and not before. The thread lift cost factors page explains what goes into it, and the which thread page explains how the material is chosen.

What does recovery look like after jawline threads, and what are the risks?

Recovery varies between people. Swelling, bruising at the entry points, tenderness along each vector and a sense of tightness or pulling when you open your mouth wide are normal early on. Small dimples or puckers where a barb has engaged usually settle as the swelling goes down; one that persists can be released. Early aftercare asks you to avoid wide mouth opening, facial massage, dental work and sleeping face down, and to keep the entry points clean, as the thread lift downtime page describes.

Less common problems relate to depth, tension or tissue: a thread felt or seen under thin skin, a thread end working out at the entry point, infection, asymmetry or thread migration. Rarely, placement deeper than the subcutaneous plane can affect a branch of the facial nerve near the jaw edge or the parotid duct in front of the ear. Respecting that plane is the main protection.

Contact the clinic if pain increases rather than settles, if redness, warmth or swelling spreads, if a thread end shows or can be felt as a hard line, if a dimple does not settle, or if an asymmetry persists once the swelling has gone. Threads cannot be dissolved on demand the way hyaluronic acid filler can; an intact thread can sometimes be removed physically early on. The thread lift gone wrong page explains how problems are assessed, including after treatment elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are designed for a particular kind of jowl: a mobile fat pad that has slid over a firm jaw edge, in skin that still recoils. In that face, barbed threads carry the pad back toward an anchor in front of the ear. They are not suited to heavy jowls, established skin excess or a jaw that lacks bony support, which is why the jowl is examined and pinch-tested before any plan.

They answer different problems. Threads reposition tissue that has slid; filler or a biostimulator adds structure where the jaw edge is soft because bone support or chin projection is lacking. Adding filler to a jowl makes it heavier, and threading a jaw without structure flattens it. Many faces need assessment for both, and the order is decided at consultation.

Expect swelling, bruising at the entry points, tenderness along the threads and a pulling feeling when opening the mouth wide in the early period. Small dimples usually settle as swelling goes down. You are asked to avoid wide mouth opening, facial massage, dental work and sleeping face down at first, and to contact the clinic if pain or redness increases.

Yes, they are often staged together. Threads move a jowl mechanically, while VF Lift – Vertical Facelift on Volnewmer heats the dermis and septa and focused ultrasound acts at the SMAS. Where descent and laxity coexist, combining a repositioning tool with an energy-based one is aimed at both. What is combined, and in which order, is decided at assessment rather than on the day.

Thread lifting of the jowl and lower face is described on the Bliss Lift page as part of Dr Sin Yong's thread protocol. Whether threads are right for your jawline, or whether filler, radiofrequency or referral fits better, is decided only after he has examined the jaw seated and in movement. Availability for your plan is confirmed at consultation.
